Student answer (Band 5.5)
This map shows the development of Beechwood farm in the year 1950 comparing it with the current site plan.
While comparing the site plan Beechwood farm in the year 1950 with the current plan we got to saw various changes occurred within this period of time. There were major changes in the top right side of the map rather than the bottom left side of the map.
In the year 1950, we got to saw track which changes into road in the current site plan. In the older site plan the top right side was the sheep but not it got modernise and had camping field and solar panels covering most of the sheep land .In addition , it has two parking places as well, one in the left hand side of entry of the road which connects with the highway and the another one at the end of the road beside the solar panel area.We also got to see development in the right bottom corner as well where we two of the major changes , one the barn changes into holiday cottages and it also got a barn beside the roundabout, while the chickens and the farmhouse remains the same over this period of time.
While coming to the bottom left corner side of the road we didn't got to saw much changes over here as everything remains the same like the fruit trees land , soft trees land and vegetables land. However, a small change appear over this period of time that is there is small farm shop in the fruit trees land which is present at the right side of the entry of road which connects the highway.Like 1950, this lands were still connected with the river which provides water for the irrigation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main transformation from a farm to a more visitor-oriented site, including the new camping field, solar panels, parking, farm shop and holiday cottages. You also note that the farmhouse, chickens and several crop areas remain. These are relevant comparisons and give the response a clear overall focus. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the barn did not change into cottages; the cottages were added south of the eastern road, while the original barn remains and another barn is shown near the junction. The sheep area is replaced by several new uses, not just camping and solar panels. The claim that the river provides irrigation is not shown, and the road layout and changes to the site’s access could be described more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable progression: an introduction, a broad comparison, discussion of the eastern part, and then the fields in the south-west. This helps the reader follow the main areas of change. However, the organisation is sometimes weakened by long sentences that combine several map features, particularly the sentence beginning “In the older site plan the top right side…”. Some linking phrases, such as “While comparing” and “While coming to,” sound mechanical, and references such as “it” and “this lands” are not always clear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main groups of changes, and connect details with precise location-based transitions such as “By contrast” or “Further south.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “site plan,” “camping field,” “solar panels,” “holiday cottages,” and “river,” so the reader can identify many of the features. There is also some attempt to describe change with phrases such as “changes into” and “remains the same.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive: “got to saw,” “modernise,” “bottom left corner side,” and “soft trees land” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “Highway” is also less suitable than the map’s “road.” Aim for precise verbs such as “was converted into,” “was added,” and “remained,” and use the correct label “soft-fruit fields.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including comparisons and clauses introduced by “while” and “where.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “we got to saw” has an incorrect verb form, “where we two of the major changes” is missing a verb, and “the chickens and the farmhouse remains” has subject–verb disagreement. Tense also shifts awkwardly between past and present in descriptions of the two plans. Several sentences run together without appropriate spacing or punctuation, making relationships between ideas harder to follow. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions for 1950 and present-tense descriptions for today, and check each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
