IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two diagrams compare the Beechwood farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, the beechwood farm modernized over time by replacing and changing few areas. A few number of new resources added to the farm such as camping site, solar panels, two parking areas in the east and northwest and holiday cottages.

There is a river in the west and it is bending in the south by covering one sides of the farm. There was a track in the middle of the farm land. The track has been replaced into a modern road. Fruit trees and soft fruits were grown in the west while vegetables were in the southwest corner. It remaine same over time. A farmhouse and chickens remained in the same in the southeast.

Furthermore, the sheep has been replaced by a camping field in the north, solar panels in the southeast, while two parking areas near to road in the east and northwest. A newly constructed farm shop can be seen in the opposite side of parking in the east next to the road. Holiday cottages are developed next to road in the east. Additionally, the road is making a triangular shaped bend in the middle and allowing road for barn.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change from a working farm to a more visitor-oriented site, mentioning the camping field, solar panels, parking and holiday cottages, and you note that the river and some agricultural areas remain. These are relevant comparisons. However, some locations are inaccurate or unclear: the camping field is northeast of the internal road, not simply “in the north,” and the solar panels are in the northeast, not the southeast. The farm shop is between the fruit trees and road, rather than “in the opposite side of parking.” The overview also says only that areas were replaced or changed, without clearly summarising the main pattern of development. More precise locations and a clearer overview would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing features. It also uses basic linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore” and “Additionally,” so the reader can follow the broad comparison. However, the progression within the detail paragraphs is uneven, and several points are repeated—for example, the new facilities are listed in the overview and then again in the final paragraph. Some references are difficult to follow, particularly “the opposite side of parking in the east,” and the final sentence about the triangular bend and access to the barn is not smoothly connected to the preceding details. Grouping unchanged features together and then describing new developments in a consistent spatial order would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “replaced,” “remained,” “constructed,” “solar panels” and “holiday cottages.” These terms help communicate the main changes, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “a few number of new resources” is not natural, and “modernized” is broad when describing specific land-use changes. “The track has been replaced into a modern road” also uses an unsuitable combination of words. In addition, “one sides” and “remaine” show errors in word form or spelling. Aim for precise map vocabulary such as “converted into,” “facilities,” “site” and “along the southern boundary,” and check spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some attempts at more complex structures, such as “while vegetables were in the southwest corner” and “while two parking areas near to road in the east and northwest.” The main comparisons are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “A few number of new resources added” lacks a correct determiner and verb, while “The track has been replaced into a modern road” has an incorrect verb pattern. There are also agreement and article problems in “the sheep has been replaced” and “next to road,” as well as awkward sentence fragments in the final paragraph. Practise forming complete sentences with accurate subject–verb agreement and use “was converted into” for this type of change.
