IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrates that have taken placed at beechwood farm between 1950 and the present day.

Overall, the farm has significant development, changing from traditional agricultural area into a place offering tourist facilities. Several new features including a farm shop, parking areas, holidays cottages and solar panels have been introduced.

Regarding the features that are present in 1950 remain unchanged like fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are still present in their original locations. Similarly the farmhouse and sheep have been developed and changed while the river continues to flow around the farm.

Turning to new developments the sheep has been converted into a camping field. A farm shop, two parking areas and several solar panels have been added. Furthermore, holiday cottages have been constructed near the farmhouse. The former tracks have been replaced by roads and the barn has been relocated to a different position.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation from a working farm to a site with visitor facilities, and your overview names several important additions, including the shop, parking, cottages and solar panels. You also correctly note that the fruit-growing and vegetable areas remain, and that the river is unchanged. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: sheep are not described as having been “developed”; the area becomes a camping field. The farmhouse remains in place rather than being changed, and the barn’s relocation is not clearly explained. The response is also three words below the required minimum. Add a little more precise comparison of the layout and clarify which original features remain, move or change use.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on retained features and one on new developments. This gives the reader a sensible progression, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Similarly” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships. The organisation is coherent, but some connections are not fully clear. For example, “the farmhouse and sheep have been developed and changed” groups together features that have different outcomes, while “Turning to new developments” introduces a list without a clear spatial sequence. The paragraph about retained features also mixes unchanged items with changed ones. To strengthen progression, group information by location or by whether features remain, are replaced or are added, and use clearer references to the map.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “traditional agricultural area,” “tourist facilities,” “introduced,” “constructed” and “relocated.” These choices help convey the broad changes, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “have taken placed” is not a natural way to describe changes, “the sheep has been converted” misidentifies the area, and “holiday cottages” is more accurate than “holidays cottages.” “Developed and changed” is also vague and does not specify what happened to the farmhouse or sheep area. Aim for precise map language such as “was converted into,” “remained unchanged” and “was added to the north-east.” Check word forms and collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast introduced by “while.” Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening has subject–verb disagreement and an incomplete construction: “The two maps illustrates that have taken placed.” In “the features that are present in 1950 remain unchanged like…,” the clause structure is awkward, and “the sheep has” does not agree with the plural sense of the animals. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “changing from traditional agricultural area.” Use a direct opening such as “The maps illustrate how Beechwood Farm has changed since 1950,” then check agreement, articles and complete clause structure. Greater accuracy in these patterns would make the comparisons clearer.
