Student answer (Band 7.5)

The maps show the changes at Beechwood Farm between 1950 and today.

Overall, Beechwood Farm has changed a lot. In the past, it was only used for farming, but today it is also used for tourism, shopping, and solar energy.

In 1950, the north-east part of the farm was a large field for sheep. Next to the river in the south-west, there were three areas for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables. In the south-east, there was a barn, a farmhouse, and an area for chickens. These places were connected by dirt tracks to a main road.

Finally, the farmhouse and chicken area have not moved. However, the barn was moved to a new place near the vegetables. Where the old barn used to be, there are now holiday cottages and a parking lot.Today, there are many changes. The dirt tracks are now paved roads. The sheep area in the north has been replaced by a camping field, a small parking area, and solar panels. Near the river, the area for fruit trees is now smaller because a farm shop and another parking space were built there. However, the soft fruits and vegetables are still in the same place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all key features of the maps, including the transition from agricultural use to a multi-purpose site. You successfully identified the main changes, such as the introduction of tourism and energy facilities, and made relevant comparisons between 1950 and the present. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, you mentioned the barn was moved 'near the vegetables,' but the map shows it was replaced by new structures. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph for the past, and a separate section for the present. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'In the past,' 'Finally,' and 'However' to link your points. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt, and the use of 'Finally' to introduce the third paragraph feels a bit mechanical as it does not logically conclude a sequence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'multi-purpose,' 'solar energy,' and 'paved roads' appropriately. The language is generally accurate and conveys the intended meaning without difficulty. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives to describe the changes, such as 'undergone significant transformation' instead of 'changed a lot' or 'replaced by' instead of 'moved to a new place.' The current vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'In the past, it was only used for farming, but today it is also used for...' and 'Where the old barn used to be, there are now holiday cottages.' While there are some minor errors, such as the missing space after the period in 'parking lot.Today,' the grammar is generally controlled and does not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free. To aim for a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or relative clauses, to describe the changes more fluidly.
