Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the development of the site over a period between 1950 to 2026. Overall, the area became more developed with several new facilities replacing natural land.

At the centre of the diagram, triangular tracks are transformed into roads. Furthermore, the farm shop has been constructed along the right side of a road and east to the fruit trees. Areas occupied by soft fruit trees and vegetables is remained unchanged. In addition, the Barn has been constructed to the south of the roads making a triangular shape. The chicken shop and the farmhouse have not been replaced. Recreational facilities like holiday cottages have been added to the northern side of the farmhouse.

The Northern area of the site which was previously a grazing ground for sheep’s now has been acquired by many other facilities. Commercial facilities like solar panels has been introduced to the north-eastern corner of the site, also the parking areas have been constructed, one is to the southern side of the solar panels and another is to the western side of the site and adjacent to the main road. In the middle of grazing ground, has been converted into a camping field.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response provides a clear overview and identifies the main changes, such as the development of roads and the addition of commercial and recreational facilities. However, the report lacks precision in describing the spatial relationships. For example, stating that the barn was constructed to the south of the roads 'making a triangular shape' is confusing, and the description of the grazing ground is somewhat disjointed. While the key features are covered, the comparison between 1950 and 2026 could be more analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the spatial descriptions are more accurate and that the overall trends are linked more effectively to the specific locations on the map.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a clear overview. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'The Northern area' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the internal structure of the second paragraph is a bit cluttered. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved to create a more cohesive narrative. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, but the logical progression within the paragraphs could be tighter to ensure a smoother reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'recreational facilities', 'commercial facilities', and 'adjacent'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'chicken shop' (likely referring to a chicken shed) and 'vegetables is remained unchanged', which shows a lack of control over verb forms. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Improving the variety of verbs used to describe change (e.g., 'transformed', 'converted', 'replaced') would enhance the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'vegetables is remained unchanged' (passive voice error), 'sheep’s' (incorrect pluralization), and 'solar panels has been introduced' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The student attempts complex structures, but the control over these is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct passive voice construction would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
