Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, including the significant changes such as the addition of solar panels, camping fields, and the conversion of the barn into cottages. However, the description is somewhat fragmented and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the two time periods is occasionally hindered by unclear phrasing, such as 'sheep area is developing in four solar panels'. To improve, ensure that the overview clearly highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift from agricultural production to tourism and renewable energy, rather than just listing changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the past to the present. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'In addition' and 'Overall' are used, but the internal flow within paragraphs is often choppy due to short, simple sentences and awkward transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'Track place are converting into road', which makes it difficult to track the specific changes being described. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring clear subject-verb agreement would significantly enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices and non-standard collocations, such as 'map picture', 'current day', and 'ancient years'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'solar panels', 'holiday cottages', and 'farm shop', the overall range is limited. Spelling errors, such as 'Northn-east' and 'decads', also detract from the quality of the writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for describing spatial changes and maps.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('sheep was located', 'Track place are converting') and article usage. The attempt at complex structures is often faulty, leading to confusion, such as in the sentence 'River and Track place were on the one road was passed'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
