IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given maps compare the layout of Beechwood farm in 1950 with its present day arrangement. From a cursory glance it is enough to make it clear that whole farm infrastructure has completely changed.
In 1950, large sheep area was occupied the northern part of the farm, while fruit trees were located near west whereas soft fruits and vegetables were grown in central part of the whole region. All tracks were connected in the southern part where barn and farmhouse builded. Chickens were kept in a small enclosure nearly the river.
In updated map, sheep field disappeared and been replaced by parking facilities, camping field and solar panels also placed in same site. Burn has shifted in small area at the end of the road junction and holiday cottage is constructed in its former site. However, other layout such as farmhouse and chicken areas remain unchanged.
Overall, the farm has been modernized considerably, while the area used for growing fruits and vegetables remained unchanged. In addition, tracks has been upgraded to roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all key features of the maps, including the changes to the sheep area, the addition of new facilities, and the relocation of the barn. The overview is clear and highlights the main trends, such as modernization and the preservation of the fruit/vegetable area. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, while you mention the barn shifted, you do not explicitly state that the farmhouse and chicken area remained unchanged in the body paragraphs, which would have strengthened the analysis. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and an overview. The progression of ideas is generally smooth. You use some cohesive devices like 'In 1950', 'In updated map', and 'However' to link information. However, the transition between sentences could be more sophisticated. Some referencing is slightly mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the changes clearly. You use relevant terms like 'infrastructure', 'modernized', and 'facilities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'cursory glance', 'builded' (which is a grammatical error, but also affects lexical precision), and 'nearly the river' (should be 'near'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations for describing map changes, such as 'transformed into' or 'replaced by'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'large sheep area was occupied' (passive voice error), 'barn and farmhouse builded' (incorrect verb form), 'sheep field disappeared and been replaced' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'tracks has been upgraded' (subject-verb agreement error). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the content. Increasing the accuracy of verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your score.
