Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The given plans provide information about the site of beechwood farm in 1950 and at present.
Overall, it is evident that it has become more modernized. There was limited development in the past, whereas it has become more developed at present time.
To begin with, the empty area was located on the north of the farm, which was converted into a parking area. In addition, the sheep were located on the northern side of the farm, then it was replaced by camping field. Subsequently, a vacant area was located on the east side of the farm, and it was removed by a parking area. Interestingly, the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables were located in the centre of the farm, which remained unchanged throughout the period.
Turning to the remaining area, the empty area was located on the north-east side of the farm, then, it was transformed into solar panels. An opposite development can be observed in the track, which was converted into roads over time. Moreover, the barn was located on the eastern side of the farm, however, it was replaced by the holiday cottages. The empty area was located on the southern side of the farm, which was transformed into a barn. It is also noticeable that the farmhouse and chickens were located on the east side of the farm, which then remained unchanged over time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all key features of the two maps, including the changes to the parking areas, camping fields, and the introduction of solar panels. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between 1950 and the present. The overview is clear and highlights the general shift toward modernization. To reach a higher band, ensure that you group features more logically rather than listing them sequentially by location, as this would better demonstrate a clear overview of the transformation. The information is accurate and fully addresses the prompt requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Subsequently,' and 'Turning to the remaining area' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of locations could be smoother to avoid repetitive sentence structures. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the farm. Overall, the flow is logical and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'converted,' 'transformed,' 'modernized,' and 'replaced.' While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to an 8.0. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language regarding the layout or the nature of the developments, such as 'repurposed' or 'underwent significant modification.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally controlled. There are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrasing (e.g., 'on the north of the farm' should be 'in the north of the farm'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause confusion. The use of passive voice is appropriate for a report of this nature. To achieve a higher score, aim for more varied complex sentence structures and ensure consistent accuracy in prepositions.
