IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Overall the both charts are almost same but there are some major differences which is made in all these years. The sheep area of 1950s is now completely changed. Now there is a big solar panels area and also a parking area along these panels. There is also a parking site attach with the road. Today there is a huge camping field in the middle of solar panels and road's parking area. The road, river, fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and farm house are still in the place where they were in 1950. But today there is also a farm shop in the area of fruit trees. There is also a barn at the edge of the triangular road which is in the middle of site.
Now there is a holiday cottage in front of farmhouse where the barn was once placed in 1950. The other things are still on their place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the two maps, identifying key changes such as the solar panels, camping field, and farm shop. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant trends, such as the shift from agricultural focus to tourism and energy production. The description is somewhat list-like and lacks analytical comparisons, such as noting the reduction in farming space. To reach a higher band, you should group information more logically and provide a more cohesive summary of the overall transformation rather than just listing individual changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into two short paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and repetitive, with sentences often starting with 'There is' or 'Now there is'. While the information is generally understandable, the lack of varied linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') makes the flow feel mechanical. Paragraphing is present, but the second paragraph is very brief and could have been integrated more effectively into the main body of the report to improve the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely heavily on basic descriptors like 'big', 'huge', and 'same'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'attach with the road' (should be 'attached to') and 'on their place' (should be 'in their place'). To improve, try to incorporate more specific terminology related to map descriptions, such as 'replaced by', 'converted into', 'remained unchanged', or 'situated to the north/south'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs would also enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'the both charts are almost same' (should be 'both charts are almost the same'), 'differences which is made' (should be 'differences which have been made'), and 'in the middle of solar panels and road's parking area' (missing articles). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of the report. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
