IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagrams depict the Beechwood farm's outlook in 1950 and at present to show how the farm have transformed.
Overall, while the surrounding remained the same, the farm itself underwent several changes today as compared to the plan from 1950.
In 1950, the layout of the farm was more simple and focused more towards the agriculture in general. It contained a big area for rearing sheep and was accessible through a track that ran within the farm. Near a triangular intersection of the track, there was a barn, a farmhouse and a place for chickens. Similarly, closer to that region and opposite to the place with sheep were fruits and vegetables. There were three fields (fruit trees, soft trees and vegetables) present side by side.
On the other hand, the site looks a bit different as of now. The area with sheep have gone a complete shift in terms of purpose and is replaced by a camping field with tents. It also contains some solar panels and two parking on either corners. Moreover, the track has now upgraded to roads allowing access to a redesigned and relocated barn as well as a farm shop near the field with fruit trees. Three holiday cottages were added in the area which previously housed a barn, while farmhouse and chicken pen remained unmodified. Finally, the black topped highway and a river which ran around the farm did not undergo any changes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all key features of the diagrams, providing a clear comparison between the 1950 and current layouts. You successfully identified the main changes, such as the transition from agricultural use to tourism-related facilities like the camping field and holiday cottages. The overview is clear and sets the stage for the detailed body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention 'three fields' in 1950 but do not explicitly contrast their current status or disappearance in the second paragraph. Overall, the information is well-selected and effectively reported.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and two distinct body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is generally clear, though ensure that pronouns or descriptive phrases consistently link back to the specific features mentioned in the diagrams.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'rearing', 'intersection', 'unmodified', and 'redesigned'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'soft trees' (likely referring to a specific crop or orchard type) and 'two parking' (which should be 'parking areas' or 'car parks'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on more academic descriptors for spatial changes would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the surrounding remained', 'the area with sheep have gone', 'the farm have transformed'). Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure that plural nouns are used correctly with their corresponding verbs.
