Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps show the changes of a farm from the past to today.

Overall, the farm changed a lot and become more modern. Many new buildings are added, but the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are still in the same place.

In the past, there was a big area for sheep in the north-east of the farm. There was also a barn and a farmhouse on the right side. Chickens was behind the farmhouse. A road connected these buildings and a river was around the farm. The left side of the farm was used for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables.

Today, the sheep area is changed into a camping field and solar panels. A parking area is built near the main road and another parking is next to the solar panels. A farm shop is also built near the fruit trees. The barn moved to the south-west side, close to the vegetable field. Holiday cottages are built between the road and the farmhouse. However, the farmhouse and chickens stay in the same place. The fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables do not changed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have clearly contrasted the past layout with the current one, highlighting key additions like the camping field, solar panels, and holiday cottages. The overview provides a good summary of the general trend toward modernization. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more precise comparisons; for example, instead of saying the barn 'moved', describe its new location relative to the original position. Additionally, ensure all features are accurately described, as the prompt implies the original barn was replaced or relocated, which you captured well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'In the past', 'Today', and 'However' to link your points. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and use more sophisticated referencing to avoid repeating 'the farm' or 'the side'. The current structure is functional and clear, which is appropriate for this level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'modern', 'connected', and 'transformed'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and basic. Phrases like 'changed a lot' and 'big area' could be replaced with more precise academic alternatives. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'another parking', which should be 'another parking area'. Expanding your range to include more specific descriptive terms for spatial changes would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Chickens was' (subject-verb agreement) and 'do not changed' (incorrect verb tense). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent tense usage—ensure you use the past tense for the 1950 description and the present tense for the current layout—and check your subject-verb agreement.
