IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The maps compare the changes made to the Beechwood farm site between 1950 and present day.
Overall, the site has a lot more facilities compared to past. The farm shop and parking area are new alongside the relocation of barn and construction of holiday cottages in its place. Camping field and solar panels have also been introduced on the site in the place of sheep.
The Beechwood farm had sheep on one side with a track dividing the place, and fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables on the opposite side of the track. The track has not changed, but only named road in present day. After transformation, today the sheep are of site has parking area built right by the road on the right side with a farm shop introduced next to fruit trees on the opposite side of the road. Soft fruits and vegetables are still present in their original places.
A camping field has also been constructed in the sheep area with two camps alongside a tree. Four solar panels have been placed on the corner of sheep area farthest from the road with another parking area right next to it.
Barn has been moved to the road triangle and holiday cottages have been built in that area. The farmhouse and chickens are still on their original places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the site changes, such as the introduction of the farm shop, camping field, and solar panels. You have provided a clear overview and supported it with specific details. However, the description of the layout is occasionally confusing, particularly when describing the 'sheep area' and the 'road triangle'. While you have covered all parts of the task, the clarity of the reporting could be improved by using more precise spatial language to help the reader visualize the changes. Overall, you have met the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different areas of the farm. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall' and 'After transformation', to guide the reader. However, some transitions between sentences are a bit mechanical or abrupt, and the referencing (e.g., 'in that area') is sometimes slightly ambiguous. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words would help the progression of ideas feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'relocation', 'construction', and 'transformation'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the sheep are of site' and 'named road', which slightly hinder the precision of your description. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied and precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'situated in the northern quadrant' or 'replaced by'. Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'relocation of barn', 'in the sheep area') and prepositions. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'The track has not changed, but only named road in present day'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading of basic grammatical rules. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
