IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two plans compare the difference between the site of a farm that was in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, it can be seen that almost half of the area that was used for sheep has now been used for renewable energy sources, parking the cars, and resting purposes. As the time passed, the farm has been developed in some area.

However, an earlier track was available for individuals to roam in the farm, which has now been upgraded to concrete roads. In addition, the farm shop has been included in the area of the fruit trees so that people can purchase necessary goods as per the requirements. Nevertheless, the barn has now shifted at the corner of the triangle-forming road, in the middle of the farm, and the position of the barn is replaced with the holiday cottages.

On the other hand, the parking lot has also created a current plan to manage traffic, located to the left of the entrance and at the end of the left road of the intersection. Furthermore, the camping facilities have been added for the people who want to rest or stay late nights on the farm. Additionally, solar panels have been installed to reduce electricity costs to run the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have highlighted key changes such as the introduction of renewable energy, the conversion of the barn, and the addition of parking and camping facilities. However, the report lacks a clear, data-driven overview of the spatial changes. While you mention that 'almost half' of the area has changed, this is not clearly supported by the visual evidence. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide a more precise summary of the layout changes and avoid vague descriptions like 'some area' or 'resting purposes'. The comparison between 1950 and today is generally clear, but could be more analytical regarding the shift from agricultural to commercial/recreational use.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific changes. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition', 'Nevertheless', and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. While these transitions are generally effective, some of the sentence-level connections feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is clear, moving from general changes to specific infrastructure updates. To improve, ensure that referencing is precise; for instance, the phrase 'the barn has now shifted at the corner' is slightly confusing as it implies the building moved rather than being replaced or repurposed. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'renewable energy sources', 'concrete roads', and 'camping facilities'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'parking the cars' (which should be 'parking facilities' or 'a car park') and 'resting purposes', which sounds unnatural in this context. The phrase 'triangle-forming road' is a bit awkward. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'converted into', 'replaced by', or 'situated to the north of'. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the barn has now shifted at the corner' (preposition error) and 'the parking lot has also created a current plan' (which is semantically unclear). Additionally, 'As the time passed' should be 'As time passed'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You have attempted complex structures, but they are not always perfectly controlled. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more accurate preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
