Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given map illustrates changes that occurred to Beechwood farm from 1950 to the current time.

Overall, the Beechwood farm extended from being a traditional farm to commercial farm with activities and holiday inn. The Beechwood farm went green and started using renewable energy with solar panels.

In 1950, the Beechwood farm had tracks on which were made into roads.

In the north-east side of the map, the area was a habitat for sheep to graze upon and live. However, now it has been transformed to a camping field for families and friends to generate money with a parking space near the main road in the north and solar panels in far north-east also built along with a parking space.

A farm shop was constructed in fruit trees area for revenue. The barn from 1950 was revamped to holiday cottages for tourists and visitor to stay. A new barn was built at the end of the road in the south for storage of fruits and other goods. The farmhouse remained as it was from 1950 till today along with the chicken coop that remains at it was.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all key features of the maps, including the transition from a traditional farm to a commercial site. You successfully identified the addition of solar panels, the camping field, the farm shop, and the new barn, while noting what remained unchanged. The overview is clear and sets the tone for the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more precise; for instance, instead of saying 'tracks were made into roads,' you could describe the expansion of the road network. Overall, the information is well-selected and the main trends are clearly highlighted.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from general changes to specific site developments. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In 1950,' though the flow between sentences could be improved with more varied linking words. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the farm's evolution. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences, such as the description of the solar panels, are slightly cluttered and could benefit from better structural cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'revamped,' 'transformed,' and 'commercial farm.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'holiday inn' (which refers to a specific hotel chain rather than a general type of accommodation) and 'generate money' (which is slightly informal). Using more precise academic vocabulary would enhance the report. The spelling is generally accurate, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'the area was a habitat for sheep to graze upon and live' (slightly awkward phrasing) and 'remains at it was' (should be 'as it was'). Punctuation is generally handled well, but there are occasional errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the errors present do not impede communication, which is consistent with a band 6.0-6.5 level.
