IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The plans show the developments made on Beachwood Farm between 1950 and today.
Overall, the farm was heavily modernized and improved for living as evidenced by addition of solar panels(for electricity), holiday cottages and a parking space. The farm shifted focus away from animals to fruit and crop farming as evidenced by removal of the sheep farm.
In 1950, Beachwood Farm practiced both animal and crop farming. There was a large area at the north eastern corner of the farm where sheep were kept. It was separated from the rest of the farm by tracks. Below the sheep farm was a barn, a farmhouse and a chicken coop. Fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables were grown on the left side of the farm.
Today, the farm is now more modernized and commercialized. The sheep farm was entirely removed and divided into two. A camping field was added to the left section and solar panels were added on right section to provided electricity to the farm. Parking spaces were added into both sections. The tracks were also improved into roads. The barn was smaller and moved to the left of the farmhouse and chicken coop while holiday cottages replaced the old barn. Fruit trees, soft fruit and vegetables farms were retained and a farm shop was added into the fruit tree farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively covers all key features of the two maps. You have successfully identified the major shifts, such as the transition from animal farming to commercial tourism and the addition of modern infrastructure like solar panels and holiday cottages. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends. You have made relevant comparisons between the 1950 layout and the current site. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for example, describing the specific location of the new farm shop relative to the fruit trees would add further clarity and detail to your analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that contrast the past and present states. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In 1950' and 'Today', to signal the shift in time. However, the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the flow between sentences. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the range of linking words would help create a more sophisticated and natural connection between your observations.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'modernized', 'commercialized', and 'retained' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'fruit tree farm' instead of 'orchard' or 'fruit-growing area'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on more academic synonyms for common verbs and nouns will help you achieve a more professional tone in your future writing tasks.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional slips, such as 'to provided electricity' (should be 'to provide') and 'added into both sections' (should be 'added to'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but ensure you maintain consistent subject-verb agreement. The grammar is strong enough to communicate your ideas clearly without any significant impediment to the reader, and you show a good command of passive voice, which is essential for describing changes in maps.
