Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to describe the changes between the two maps, but it fails to provide a clear summary or highlight the main features effectively. The writing is overly descriptive of the process of looking at the chart rather than reporting the data itself. There is no clear overview of the significant transformations, such as the conversion of agricultural land into leisure facilities. The response lists items like 'parking' and 'camping field' without explaining their spatial relationship or the overall evolution of the site. To improve, focus on identifying key trends and grouping features logically rather than listing them in a narrative style.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is repetitive and mechanical, such as the frequent use of 'I saw' and 'the chart give me'. The referencing is often unclear, and the transition between the 1950s layout and the current layout lacks logical flow. The text reads more like a stream of consciousness than a structured report. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'whereas') would help create a more professional and coherent structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'I saw', 'talk about', and 'many different things' are too informal and lack the precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. There is a lack of topic-specific vocabulary related to map descriptions, such as 'transformed', 'converted', 'demolished', or 'expanded'. The student relies on simple nouns and verbs, which limits the ability to describe the changes accurately. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include synonyms and more precise descriptive terms is essential for achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'This chart show me', 'the chart give me') and article usage. Sentence structures are predominantly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences that lack proper conjunctions or full stops. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring verbs agree with their subjects, and practicing the use of complex structures like relative clauses or passive voice to describe changes.
