Student answer (Band 7.5)

The map illustrates the changes in a farm from 1950 to the present day.

Overall, the area has become more developed than the past with addition of parking space, roads, solar panels, accommodation facilities, and camping sites.

The sheep area is replaced with two parking spaces (one at the entrance and another at the exit of the farm), and camping fields. The farm has also been introduced with the installation of solar panels on the right corner of the farm. The tracks have been upgraded to roads for convenience.

Another side of the farm also went through some significant changes. A farm shop has opened along with fruit trees to offer fresh fruits and vegetables to the customers. The land used to grow soft fruits, vegetables, to keep chickens, and farmhouse remains unchanged. The barn has been shifted to near the vegetable fields, whereas the old barn space has been used for holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have clearly highlighted the key changes, such as the addition of solar panels, parking, and the conversion of the barn. The overview is concise and effectively captures the general trend of development. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more precise comparisons between the two maps. For instance, instead of saying 'another side of the farm', you could use more specific directional language (e.g., 'in the northern section' or 'to the west of the farmhouse'). Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by location. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'whereas' and 'along with', which help link your points. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'upgraded', 'installation', and 'accommodation facilities'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for a report on maps. There are a few minor issues with collocation, such as 'introduced with the installation', which sounds slightly unnatural. To improve, try to incorporate more precise verbs for describing spatial changes, such as 'converted into', 'replaced by', or 'expanded'. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy reading. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'the area has become more developed than the past' (should be 'than in the past') and 'the farm has also been introduced with' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Despite these minor errors, your control of grammar is generally strong, and your punctuation is used correctly throughout the response. You have a solid foundation here.
