Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the given two maps one illustrates the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the other shows us how the site has changed over the years till now.

Overall, the most noticeable developments were the new buildings at the side of the road, the area that was previously used by sheep becoming more urban, upgraded track, and the barn relocating to a smaller but more reachable place.

Firstly, it is shown that the previous track has been switched to a paved road. Consequently a farm shop was opened right beside where the main road and the paved road cross. While on the other side of the road a new car park was built. Moreover, once a large empty area that was only used for keeping the sheep's had become more lively by having a camping field where the trees were planted on the one side, while on the other side the new solar panels were installed. The barn was relocated to a smaller, more accessible position near the road. As a result the big barn of the past has been turned into holiday cottages that additionally were introduced with a car park.

Lastly the places that have remained the same over the years were the three cultivated areas ( fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables ) beside the road as well as the farmhouse an the chicken coop.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers the main features of the maps. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the road development, the addition of the farm shop and car park, and the repurposing of the barn and sheep area. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant transformations. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, while you mention the barn was relocated, specifying the relative change in size or location more clearly would strengthen the analysis. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt requirements comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'moreover', and 'as a result' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed description. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'the other side of the road' could be more clearly linked to the specific features mentioned previously to avoid any ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'relocated', 'accessible', 'cultivated', and 'upgraded'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'keeping the sheep's' (should be 'sheep') and 'lively' (which is slightly informal for a map description). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'transformed into' or 'replaced by', and ensure pluralization is consistent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'the given two maps one illustrates' (missing punctuation/conjunction) and 'an the chicken coop' (spelling error), the meaning remains clear throughout. You show good control over verb tenses, appropriately using the present perfect to describe changes over time. To reach a higher band, focus on eliminating minor slips in articles and prepositions, and aim for more consistent punctuation to enhance the flow of your complex sentences.
