Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates that the Beechwood Farm in 1950 was very simple there was a road across the river on the northwest side of the road there was a sheep area and below the sheep there was a track which connect the road, and the river and have a triangle part in the track on the road side and river side there was a fruit trees which one side connect to road and other side connect to the river and third side connect to the track and the fourth side have a Soft fruites and the southwest side of the soft fruits there was a vegetables.Where the track connects to the river on the south side, there was a barn, and below the barn there was a Farmhouse, and below the farmhouse there was a chickens, which also connects to the river, the river also in curve shape, but today there was alot of changes in Beechwood Farm in 1950,there was a sheep area now a day it transform into two parkings and camping field also have solar pannels place. The track converts into the road. The fruit trees also have a farm shop, and the barn transformed into the holiday cottages and barn moves below the road where the triangle is.There was a lot of difference in 1950 and today.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the conversion of the sheep area and the addition of new facilities. However, the description is somewhat cluttered and lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant trends. The spatial descriptions are often repetitive and rely on a 'list-like' approach rather than a comparative analysis. To improve, you should group information more logically—perhaps by area or by the nature of the changes—and ensure you provide a clear introductory overview that highlights the most striking transformations, such as the shift from agricultural to commercial and recreational use.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. It is presented as a single block of text, which is a significant weakness in terms of structure. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices (e.g., 'where the track connects', 'but today'), they are often used mechanically or incorrectly. The flow between the 1950 description and the current state is abrupt. To improve, you must use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the 1950 description, the current state, and a concluding summary. Using a wider range of linking words would also help guide the reader more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic directional language ('on the side', 'below', 'connect'). There are also inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'soft fruites' (soft fruit) and 'chickens' (referring to the area, likely a chicken coop or enclosure). The use of 'a lot of changes' is quite informal for an Academic Task 1 response. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'replaced by', 'converted into', 'situated in the vicinity of', or 'underwent significant development'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding sentence structure, punctuation, and verb tense consistency. Many sentences are 'run-on' sentences, where multiple clauses are joined incorrectly without proper punctuation (e.g., 'the river also in curve shape, but today there was alot of changes'). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the misuse of articles and prepositions is common. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence boundaries by using periods instead of commas to separate independent clauses. Additionally, ensure consistent use of past tense for the 1950 map and present tense for the current map.
