Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps illustrate the Beechwood farm site in 1950 compared to the present layout.

Overall, major improvements and constructions were observed in the recent plan, whereas the most significant upgrade was converting the massive open field in the north part of Beechwood farm into several functional areas. Although, some of the orginal layout were still present in the current site.

In 1950 Beechwod farm layout, the largest area which covered almost half of the farm was dedicated to herding sheeps. Across to it was the different type of vegetations such as fruit trees which is located beside the main road and at the farthest east side. Next to it was the trees that bear soft fruits, then followed by vegetables. In the south west part of the farm, divided by the triangular track, the barn and farmhouse were next to each other. Behind the farmhouse, however, the chickens were being cooped.

On the other hand, the present map shows an upgrade. One major upgrade was changing the tracks into roads. Another was developing the sheep yard in the north western corner into two separate parts: a camping field and putting up solar panels. Both sections have their designated parking spots. Although, the first one was conveniently found in the main entrance across the newly built farm shop. Lastly, a barn was added next to the vegetables area and the farmhouse.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers the main features of the maps, providing a clear comparison between 1950 and the present day. You successfully identified the major changes, such as the conversion of the sheep field into a camping area and solar farm, as well as the addition of the farm shop and new roads. The overview is clear and sets the tone for the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurately described; for example, the 'barn' was not added, but rather the original barn remains while a new 'farm shop' was constructed. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a logical selection of key features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that contrast the past and present. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'In 1950', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of 'Although' at the start of sentences is occasionally grammatically awkward (e.g., 'Although, some of the orginal layout...'). Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used within sentences rather than as isolated fragments would enhance the flow and cohesion of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'functional areas', 'designated parking spots', and 'layout'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'orginal' (original) and 'sheeps' (the plural of sheep is sheep). Additionally, 'herding sheeps' is not the most natural collocation; 'grazing sheep' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise descriptive language related to spatial changes would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'the different type of vegetations' (should be 'different types of vegetation') and 'the trees that bear soft fruits, then followed by vegetables' (which lacks a clear subject). Subject-verb agreement and pluralization issues occur occasionally. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for articles and plural forms would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
