Student answer (Band 7.0)

The following two maps illustrate the layout of a farm in 1950 and the present, respectively. In addition, in both the maps, it is evident that infrastructure has been built near the intersection of a road and a river.

In 1950, there existed a track through the main road, that allowed access to the farm's infrastructure. Towards the left side of the track, sheep used to gaze. Whereas on the right side of the track and between the river, at first, there were a lot of fruit trees planted. Thereafter, followed by soft fruits and vegetable plantations. Further, as one walked straight by the track, the path splits in two and then reunites again. Next to the union of the track, there existed a barn that was located parallel to a farmhouse at the left-hand side. Although, chickens were kept right outside the farmhouse.

On the other hand, at present, there are a lot of notable developments and changes since the sheep are not kept at the farm anymore and the previously used land for the purpose is transitioned into a camping field along with solar panels installed next to it. The fruit trees plantation, now comprises of a farm shop parallel to a new parking. In addition, the track has been transitioned into a road. Further, the old barn has been converted into three holiday cottages. At last, the new barn has been relocated in between the vegetable plantation and the chicken farm, further connected by the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm in 1950 and the present. You have provided a clear overview of the changes, such as the transition from agricultural use to recreational and energy-related facilities. You effectively compare the two periods by highlighting the removal of sheep and the conversion of the barn. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that your overview is more distinct and clearly separated from the body paragraphs. While you cover the main features, some details, such as the exact location of the new barn or the specific layout of the parking area, could be described with more precision to ensure the reader can fully visualize the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression from the 1950 layout to the present-day changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two time periods. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Further', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between the description of the track and the barn in the first body paragraph could be more fluid to avoid a list-like feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'reunites', 'transitioned', and 'relocated'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'sheep used to gaze' (sheep graze) and 'fruit trees plantation' (fruit tree plantation). Additionally, 'at the union of the track' is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations related to map descriptions—such as 'situated to the north of' or 'replaced by'—would enhance your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'In both the maps' (In both maps), 'the path splits... and then reunites' (tense inconsistency with 'existed'), and 'the fruit trees plantation, now comprises of' (unnecessary comma and incorrect preposition 'comprises of' instead of 'comprises'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.
