IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The supplied maps illustrate the layout of Beechwood farm and compare it with its design from 1950.

Overall, it is immediately apparent that the vast grazing area away from the river has been repurposed into a camping site and the central track has been replaced by a road.

In 1950, the farm had a sheep grazing area besides main grand trunk road at the north of the river and a track separated it from the agricultural area. The agricultural area at the bank of the river was divided in two sections: green land and vegetables and animal farming. The green land had fruit trees and vegetables while the other had a barn, farmhouse and chickens.

The farm has undergone significant modifications including the transformation of grazing area into a camping field equipped with parking areas and solar grid station for electricity generation. Likewise, the former barn is converted into holiday cottages and a new barn is built connected directly to road besides chicken area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features and provides a clear overview of the changes. You have highlighted the key transformations, such as the repurposing of the grazing land and the infrastructure updates. However, the description of the 1950 layout is slightly confusing; for instance, referring to the 'main grand trunk road' is not supported by the provided map labels, and the distinction between the two sections of agricultural land could be more precise. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptive details are strictly derived from the visual data provided and avoid adding external information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'Likewise' and 'In 1950' to link information. However, the transition between the description of the 1950 map and the current map could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus to enhance the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'repurposed', 'undergone significant modifications', and 'transformation'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'besides main grand trunk road' (which is grammatically awkward) and 'solar grid station' (which is not standard terminology for a solar farm). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations related to map descriptions—such as 'situated to the north of' or 'replaced by'—would elevate the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'besides main grand trunk road' (missing articles), 'the other had a barn' (vague reference), and 'connected directly to road besides chicken area' (missing articles and prepositions). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage (a/the) and prepositional accuracy will help improve your grammatical control.
