Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given plans illustrate the farm known as Beechwood Farm and how it used to look in 1950 compared to now.

Overall, the farm had gone under a massive change and modernisation compared to the past.

In 1950 the farm there was a fruit tree section at the entrance of the farm along the river, next to the trees, soft fruits were grown. After that, vegetables were farmed. And the corner there were chickens raised and the farmhouse was between the barn and the chickens. There was a track in the middle that was used to go to the farm and the land next to the track were used for sheeps.

However, the farm had undergone a massive remodelling. Now, a shop was placed in the fruits garden so the visitors can buy fruits and other product, and the track were upgraded to a proper roads. There a holiday cottage was built for guests to stay. The sheep area was converded to camping field and to make powers required in farm solars pannels were added next to it. Also parking spaces were constructed at the both end of the road for guests to park their vehicles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the two maps, including the transition from agricultural use to a more commercial and tourism-oriented site. You successfully identified the main changes, such as the addition of the shop, holiday cottage, and solar panels. However, the description of the 1950 layout is slightly cluttered, and some comparisons could be more explicit. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview clearly highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift from farming to leisure, rather than just listing features. The inclusion of specific details like the parking spaces and the conversion of the sheep area shows a good grasp of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Also' to connect ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. For instance, the second body paragraph is quite dense. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would improve the overall progression. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between the past and present could be smoother to help the reader follow the chronological changes more easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernisation', 'remodelling', and 'constructed'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'converded' (converted) and 'solars pannels' (solar panels). Additionally, 'the farm had gone under a massive change' is slightly unnatural; 'undergone a massive transformation' would be more precise. While you successfully convey the meaning, increasing your use of more sophisticated collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of technical terms would elevate your score. The vocabulary is sufficient to describe the changes, but lacks the precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the track were upgraded' (should be 'was') and 'at the both end' (should be 'at both ends'). Some tense usage is inconsistent when describing the past versus the present. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic agreement errors and ensure that your verb tenses consistently reflect the time frame being discussed (past for 1950, present for current).
