Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the addition of the farm shop, solar panels, and holiday cottages. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the prompt asks for comparisons, the response lists changes sequentially rather than synthesizing the information effectively. The overview provided is quite brief and could be more detailed regarding the overall transformation from a purely agricultural site to a tourist-oriented one. Some details, such as the specific location of the barn relocation, are described, but the overall spatial relationship between features could be clearer to meet the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between the description of the 1950s and the present day is abrupt. The use of 'Also' and 'Nevertheless' is functional but basic. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal flow within the body paragraph could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the various changes to the farm's layout. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels like a list of observations rather than a cohesive report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'recreational facilities', 'relocated', and 'solar panels'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'tourists attraction' (should be 'tourist attraction') and 'distributed in two halves' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive verbs to characterize the changes in the landscape.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the main significant changes has been observed' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'the area near the road and river have accommodated' (should be 'has been accommodated'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'make this place to be a tourists attraction'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing changes in maps.
