Student answer (Band 8.0)
The diagram given below shows how the Beechwood Farm changed between 1950 and today.
Overall, the farm has been modernized and partly transformed into a tourist destination. Although the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, farmhouse and chicken area have remained same, the sheep field has been replaced by a camping field and solar panels. In addition, the tracks have been upgraded to roads, and several new facilities have been added.
In 1950, the western side of the farm was used to grown fruit trees, soft fruits and some vegetables. A large area in the north-east was used for sheep. On the eastern side, there was a barn located above the farmhouse, while a chicken enclosure was situated below it. All parts of the farm were connected by tracks, and a river along the western and southern edges.
Today, the area for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables remain in the same location, However, the sheep field has been converted into camping field, and solar panels have been installed in the north-eastern side of the farm. A farm shop and parking area have been built near the entrance while another parking has been added near the solar panels. Furthermore, holiday cottages have been constructed next to the farmhouse, and the barn has been moved further south. And the tracks have been replaced by roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively covers all key features of the two maps. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the conversion of the sheep field into a camping area and the addition of new infrastructure like solar panels and holiday cottages. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the barn was moved, but describing its original position relative to the farmhouse more clearly would enhance the comparison. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a logical selection of information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the description of the past from the present. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is generally accurate, making the text easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'modernized', 'transformed', 'upgraded', and 'converted' appropriately. There is a good attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to maps and development. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or precise descriptive adjectives would elevate the lexical range further. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over tense usage—shifting from the past tense for 1950 to the present perfect and present tense for current features—is accurate. There are minor punctuation slips, such as the comma splice in 'the area for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables remain in the same location, However', and a minor grammatical error with 'used to grown' instead of 'used to grow'. These are infrequent and do not hinder understanding.
