Student answer (Band 6.5)

The schematic diagram show a plan on a Beechwood farm site in 1950 and same site presently.

Overall, it can be seen that there were more developments and structures in today's farm site than it was in 1950.

This can be illustrated by seeing the track path constructed into road leading to so many modernized buildings erected in the space, beside the fruit trees, one can see a farm shop which was not there in 1950, also in the area mapped out for Barn, chicken and farm house, another structure called holiday cottages has been erected. Additionally, the large open arena for sheep in 1950 was partitioned and different houses including double space for parking, camping field and area for solar panels was seen occupying the place.

In conclusion, the extent of remoulding the 1950 farm site to a more modernized site of this day is glaring and its new look is more compelling.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the transformation, such as the addition of the farm shop, holiday cottages, and solar panels. However, the description is somewhat generic and lacks precise detail regarding the spatial layout or the specific reduction of certain areas (e.g., the loss of the original barn or the reduction of the sheep area). While the overview is present, it is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific comparisons between the two time periods, such as noting that the original barn was replaced or that the sheep area was significantly reduced to accommodate new facilities.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally clear. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'This can be illustrated by', 'Additionally', 'In conclusion'). The sentence structure within the body paragraph is slightly cluttered, making it difficult to follow the sequence of changes. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'modernized', 'erected', 'partitioned', and 'remoulding'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'track path constructed into road' and 'double space for parking'. The phrase 'glaring' is also slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for map descriptions, such as 'converted into', 'replaced by', or 'expanded'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The schematic diagram show' (subject-verb agreement), 'than it was in 1950' (awkward comparison), and 'area for solar panels was seen' (passive voice usage). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are overly long and run-on, which affects clarity. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining sentence boundaries will help improve your accuracy.
