Student answer (Band 6.5)

The plans below illustrate the comparison of a Beechwood farm in 1950 and at present.

Overall, the site has changed considerably and there are numerous modern buildings. However, areas of edibles and the river remain unchanged.Furthermore, a number of parking has built for more easiness.

Beechwood farm in 1950 was a simple area with not many amenities. All buildings were at the corner of the road. Many alternations have been done today.

Furthermore, there is a river that runs beneath the main road that has not moved from the previous position. There are fruit and vegetable shops adjacent to the main road that have not changed their site. The chicken shop and farmhouse are side by side at the same place as in the past.

The track has been converted to road; and on the other side of the track there are two parking areas and a camping field. The sheep have been moved from that place and now there is an area for solar panels behind the parking lot. By the side of the river, there are holiday cottages, In addition, the barn has been moved with a vegetable shop.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the conversion of the track to a road, the addition of parking, and the introduction of solar panels and holiday cottages. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview of the most significant trends. While the main features are reported, the comparison between 1950 and the present could be more integrated. Some details, such as the mention of 'edibles' (which is not standard terminology for crops), are slightly imprecise. Overall, the response addresses the requirements but lacks the depth of analysis expected for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the repetitive use of 'Furthermore' and 'In addition'. The flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between the description of the river and the shops feels abrupt. While the logical progression is generally clear, the paragraphing and the use of linking words could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes clearly. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'edibles' instead of 'crops' or 'vegetation', and 'easiness' instead of 'convenience'. The phrase 'a number of parking has built' is also grammatically and lexically awkward. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'amenities' and 'converted', the range is somewhat limited, and the errors in collocation occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the content.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a number of parking has built' (should be 'parking areas have been built') and 'Many alternations have been done' (should be 'Many alterations have been made'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing spaces after commas and incorrect semicolon usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and passive voice construction would improve the accuracy.
