IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The plans compare the layout of Beechwood Farm in 1950 with its present-day arrangement.
Overall, the farm has undergone substantial redevelopment over the period. Although the areas used for growing crops, together with the farmhouse and river, have remained largely unchanged, livestock farming has disappeared and the site has been modernised with tourist facilities, improved roads and renewable-energy infrastructure.
On the western side of the farm, the sections containing fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables have all been retained in their original locations. However, a farm shop has been added beside the fruit orchard, while a parking area has been constructed close to the main entrance. In addition, the former track crossing the farm has been widened and replaced by a road.
The eastern part of the farm has experienced the greatest transformation. The sheep grazing area has been converted into a camping field, and a large group of solar panels has been installed in the north-east corner, together with another parking area. Furthermore, the network of tracks has been replaced by roads, the barn has been relocated to the south-west of the farmhouse, and holiday cottages have been built beside it. By contrast, the farmhouse, chicken enclosure and river have remained unchanged.
