IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates the changes in beechwood farm in 1950 and today.
Overall, there is substantial development done on the farm over the period, many new shops and aminities were added. However the main road, river, soft fruits and vegetables plots remained unchanged during this period.
On the north-east side, in 1950 there was only sheep above the track path but today that area is divided into two parts, one part hosting solar panels with a parking lot beside the road and other part has camping field with its own parking lot attached to main road and small road. Subsequently, the main road remained unchanged from 1950 and the track path is now a proper road.
Now on the south-east side, in 1950 below the track path there was a barn, farmhouse and chickens but now only the farmhouse and chickens stay the same, the barn is now converted in to hoilday cottages and a new barn is built at the curve of the road. Now on the south-west side fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables plots all remained mainly unchanged, the only difference is a small farm shop is built on fruit trees plot near the main road. Finally the river remained same from 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all key features of the maps. You have identified the major changes, such as the addition of solar panels, the camping field, and the conversion of the barn, while correctly noting the elements that remained unchanged. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more precise; for instance, describing the 'track path' becoming a 'proper road' is good, but you could further highlight the spatial changes more effectively by using more specific directional language. Overall, the task is well-addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location (north-east, south-east, south-west). The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the north-east side' and 'Finally', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the use of 'Now' at the start of paragraphs is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking phrases would enhance the flow and make the cohesion feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'substantial development', 'converted', and 'remained unchanged'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'aminities' (amenities) and 'hoilday' (holiday), which slightly detract from the quality. Additionally, some word choices are a bit simplistic, such as 'stay the same' or 'remained same'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to map descriptions, such as 'transformed', 'replaced', or 'redeveloped', and ensure careful proofreading to avoid basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'there was only sheep' (should be 'there were only sheep') and 'barn is now converted in to' (should be 'converted into'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas after introductory phrases. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more error-free sentences and demonstrate a wider variety of complex structures, such as using passive voice or relative clauses more consistently to describe the changes.
