IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps show the information about the Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Firstly, in1950, Beechwood Farm was a normal area but today so many changes can be seen clearly. The road is built for transportation and the river remained the same. No changes are seen at the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetable places, it is kept as before. The walking track is converted into roads and the solar panels are major development at the north-east side.
After that, sheep area is changed into parking and camping field and a tree is planted beside the camping area. The barn area is converted into holiday cottages and there is also a parking area available for tourists, which is connected with the road. Farmhouse and chicken places remained as it is and barn area is constructed at south-east side.
Overall, some places remained unchanged, the major development is solar panels and camping field and holiday cottages at today's farm and also make it a tourist attraction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the addition of solar panels, the conversion of the barn into holiday cottages, and the new parking/camping areas. However, the description is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of 'normal area' is vague and does not accurately describe the 1950s farm layout. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between the two time periods could be more analytical. The overview is present but lacks a clear synthesis of the transformation from a working farm to a tourist-oriented site. Some details, like the specific location of the new barn, are mentioned, but the overall reporting lacks the precision required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to specific changes and concluding with an overview. The progression of ideas is generally clear. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Firstly', 'After that', 'Overall'). Some transitions feel forced, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'it is kept as before', which lacks a clear antecedent. While the paragraphing is functional, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to connect the 1950s state with the current one more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. The student relies on basic descriptive terms like 'normal area', 'major development', and 'changed into'. There are some inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'the road is built for transportation' (which is a general statement rather than a description of the map) and 'solar panels are major development'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. To improve, the student should use more specific terminology related to map descriptions, such as 'transformed', 'replaced', 'extended', or 'remained unchanged'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in1950' (missing space), 'the road is built' (tense inconsistency when describing a map), and 'farmhouse and chicken places remained as it is' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student should focus on consistent verb tenses when describing past and present states and ensure subject-verb agreement is maintained throughout the text. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure could be more varied to improve flow.
