Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the maps, but the information is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, the claim that 'Sheep was demolished' is unclear, and the description of the layout is difficult to follow. The overview is poorly constructed, containing grammatical errors that obscure the summary of changes. While the response identifies some additions like the farmhouse and parking, it fails to clearly contrast the 1950 layout with the current one. The lack of clarity in reporting the main features and the inclusion of confusing details prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or incorrect, such as the awkward transition 'while but now concrected'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track which features are being discussed or where they are located on the map. The internal structure of the sentences is often disjointed, which hinders the flow of information. To improve, the student should focus on using clear signposting and ensuring that each paragraph has a distinct, logical focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often used incorrectly. Phrases like 'concrected' (likely meant 'constructed' or 'concrete') and 'under the small parking' demonstrate a lack of precision. There is also significant repetition of basic terms. The student struggles to use appropriate terminology for describing map changes, such as 'adding facilities' instead of 'new facilities were added' or 'the site was developed'. The errors in word choice occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the spatial relationships described.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that affect readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('Sheep was demolished'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures ('Track was constracted into the barn junction'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary capitalization and missing spaces after commas. The range of structures is limited, and the attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, leading to a lack of clarity. Significant improvement in basic sentence construction and proofreading is required to achieve a higher band score.
