Student answer (Band 4.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

Hope you're doing well. I am writing this letter to sincerely apologise you regarding the noise came out of my house.

Last weekend, we have organised a small party that included a bunch of people. There was some food and a music. I assume the music was pretty loud and the noises must have disturbed you and your family. I am feeling really sorry about the inconvenience happened to you.

Actually, few days ago, my brother came to canada and I have met him after 2 years. Therefore, I was incredibly excited and I have also invited some of our far relatives. I didn't realise that party w'll become this huge and cause a trouble to our neighbours.

In future, I w'll make sure that this will not happen again. And also, for any more events, I will make sure to inform to you and other neighbours priorly. Furthermore, the music will be turned down after 10 pm. And we will try to control the noises.

Once again, please accept my apology regarding same. Hope you've a good day.

Kind regards,

Supreet gill

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The student has completely misunderstood the task requirements. The prompt explicitly asks for an Academic Task 1 report describing changes in a farm site between 1950 and today. Instead, the student has written a formal letter of apology to a neighbor regarding a noise complaint. Because the response is entirely off-topic and fails to address the visual data provided, it cannot be assessed against the criteria for an Academic Task 1 report. It does not select or report on the main features of the farm plans, nor does it make any comparisons between the two time periods.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is structured as a formal letter with appropriate salutations and paragraphing. Ideas are logically sequenced for a letter, moving from the apology to the explanation and finally to the proposed solution. However, because the content is irrelevant to the task, the coherence is applied to the wrong genre. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Furthermore', and 'In future' are used correctly to link ideas, but they do not serve the purpose of describing the provided visual data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for a personal letter, using phrases like 'sincerely apologise', 'inconvenience', and 'incredibly excited'. However, there are some awkward collocations and errors, such as 'priorly' (which is not standard English) and 'inconvenience happened to you' (should be 'caused to you'). The range is limited to everyday language and lacks the specific vocabulary required to describe maps, such as 'demolished', 'converted', 'extended', or 'replaced'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'apologise you' (missing 'to'), 'noise came out' (should be 'noise coming from'), 'a music' (uncountable noun), and 'inconvenience happened' (passive voice required). The use of 'w'll' is an informal contraction that should be avoided in formal writing. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and verb tense usage is noticeable.
