IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagrams illustrate the developments on a farm focusing on the changes made to its plan, contrasting the current design with that in 1950.

Overall, although a lot of new features have been added to the farm, the main land distribution for growing fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables has remained consistent throughout.

At first glance of the map, it is abundantly clear that the track has been replaced by a road. While holiday cottages were added in place of the barn, the farmhouse and the chickens have remained in their place. Moreover, a new barn has been set up which has been provided with road connectivity.

Furthermore, the land for sheep has been renovated to a great extent by adding solar panels and a camping field. It can also be noticed that a farm shop has been introduced on one side of the road. Parking space has been created not only near the camping site but also close to the solar panels.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the farm's development well. You have successfully identified key changes, such as the replacement of the track with a road, the conversion of the barn into cottages, and the addition of solar panels and a camping site. The overview provides a clear summary of the overall trends. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully supported by the data; for instance, you mention the land for fruit and vegetables remained consistent, but you could have been more specific about the spatial shifts or the reduction in certain areas to provide a more comprehensive analysis of the transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information thematically. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'At first glance', 'While', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, meeting the requirements for a high band in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and changes, such as 'developments', 'consistent', 'renovated', and 'introduced'. The word choice is generally precise and natural. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used allows for a clear description of the spatial changes. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terminology related to land use or urban planning to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use passive voice effectively, which is appropriate for describing changes in a formal report (e.g., 'has been replaced', 'has been set up'). The grammar is generally accurate, with only minor slips that do not impede communication. The punctuation is handled well, and the sentence construction is varied enough to maintain interest. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing a good level of control over complex grammatical forms.
