Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, there are many changes done in Beechwood farm from a traditional agricultural site into a mixed-use area that combines farming with tourism and renewable energy. While the fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, farm houses and chickens have remained, several new facilities have introduced and the sheep field has been completely replaced.

In 1950, the northern part of the farm is occupied by sheep and the southern part is filled by many cultivation and small sheds of animals, in the east part of the farm there is a barn for storing food for the domestic animals and a farm house near the barn in the vast south a chicken coops are occupied, then to the western side the farmer has planted fruit trees, soft trees, and vegetables and ready for harvesting.

Today, the sheep field has been converted into a camping area in the center, and a solar panel installation in the northeast. A farm shop and a parking area have been built near the entrance in the northwest, while an additional parking area has been added beside the solar panels. The tracks have been upgraded into roads, and the barn has been relocated to the south of the central junction. Furthermore, holiday cottages have been constructed east of the barn, whereas the farmhouse and chicken enclosure have remained in their original positions. The river and the surrounding road have not changed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response effectively identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You successfully highlight the shift from a purely agricultural site to a mixed-use facility, noting the addition of tourism and renewable energy elements. The overview is clear, and the comparison between 1950 and today is well-structured. However, the description of the 1950 layout is slightly cluttered and could benefit from more precise spatial referencing to ensure the reader can easily visualize the changes. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, providing a clear summary of the key developments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph for the 1950 layout, and a body paragraph for the current layout. The use of cohesive devices such as 'while', 'whereas', and 'furthermore' helps to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences in the second paragraph feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'converted', 'relocated', 'upgraded', and 'mixed-use'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'many cultivation' (which should be 'areas of cultivation') and 'soft trees' (which is not a standard term for fruit bushes). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of the spatial changes. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations related to land use and development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'many changes done in' (should be 'made to'), 'several new facilities have introduced' (passive voice error: 'have been introduced'), and 'a chicken coops are occupied' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall understanding of the report. To improve, pay closer attention to passive voice constructions and subject-verb agreement, as these are essential when describing changes in diagrams.
