IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The map depicts how the farm has been developed over the period of 1950 till today.
Overall, there are many new features added to the farm over time. New buildings are established and some other inclusions are made on the already built places. However, only a few spots are kept as they were in 1950.
To begin with, the track that linked the main road to the farm is now replaced with the concrete road. There was a big barn at the end of the road, which is now converted into holiday cottages and a relatively smaller barn is built at the southern end of the triangular road. Specific areas are reserved for the parking areas; these are built on the starting and the ending point of the road.
One of the biggest change happened with the time is the large area for sheep is now distributed into two parts; one for putting the solar panels and other for the camping feild. Meanwhile, only places which do not undergo any changes with time are the fruit trees, the soft fruits and the vegetables. However, a farm shop has been made near the main road, where you can buy freshly picked crops. On the other hand, the areas reserved for a farmhouse and the chickens remained same over the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the farm's development well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the conversion of the barn into cottages, the addition of solar panels, and the new road layout. The overview is clear and highlights the main trend of modernization. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, you mention the sheep area was distributed into two parts, but you could have more explicitly contrasted the reduction in farming space with the introduction of recreational facilities. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the significant changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Meanwhile', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the site. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression between the description of the road and the land use is more seamless. Overall, the information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'converted', 'established', and 'undergo'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'inclusions are made on the already built places' and 'camping feild' (spelling error). To improve, aim for more precise collocations; for example, instead of 'big change happened with the time', use 'significant transformation occurred over the period'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated, topic-specific terminology would enhance the quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the areas reserved for a farmhouse and the chickens remained same' (should be 'remained the same') and 'the track that linked... is now replaced' (tense consistency could be improved by using 'has been replaced'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear and communication is not impeded. To aim for a higher band, focus on ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing historical changes and refining the use of articles.
