IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This report depicts the Beechwood farm across 2 categories of maps, one is in 1950 and other one is in present situation.
It is clear that farm has altered considerably with many new features can be seen in the second map. Looking at both maps in more detail, we can see that camping field and solar panels have been designed and installed for the animals. Furthermore, these panels generate electric energy for the farm during the day time.
In 1950, vehicles had no parking site but now current situation, the 2nd design depicts the 2 parking slots which are close to the main road.
The other physical structure that has been added is a farm shop for the people, located near the fruit trees. In addition, a barn which was located on the west side of the track is replaced with holiday cottages for the visitors and now the barn has been constructed nearby the junction of two roads.
To sum up, before these developments the farm was completely bare apart from these tweaking. In fact, with the passage of time many features have been added for the ease of people and the workers who are currently working in the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, such as the addition of solar panels, parking, and the farm shop. However, the response lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes. While you mention that the farm has 'altered considerably,' a more effective overview would highlight the shift from a purely agricultural site to a more commercial and visitor-oriented facility. Additionally, some details are slightly inaccurate; for instance, you mention solar panels were installed 'for the animals,' which is not supported by the visual data. Ensure your summary focuses strictly on the provided information to avoid misinterpretation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The report is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 1950 layout to the present day. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore,' 'In addition,' and 'To sum up' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, such as separating infrastructure changes from functional additions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the changes effectively. You use terms like 'physical structure,' 'junction,' and 'considerably' appropriately. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'tweaking' to describe major structural developments, which is not the most suitable term in this context. Additionally, the phrase 'for the ease of people' is slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, aim for more precise, academic collocations and avoid informal or vague terminology when describing structural changes to a site.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'one is in 1950 and other one is in present situation' lacks articles and correct prepositional usage. You also have issues with subject-verb agreement and article omission, such as 'working in the farm' instead of 'on the farm.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for articles and prepositions to improve your accuracy.
