Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided maps compare the layout and development of the site a farm in 1950 till today.

Overall, it is evident that a beechwood farm underwent considerable transformation, with several new facilities being introduced and existing structures being modified.

In 1950, a beechwood farm consisted mainly of seven facilities. To the east, there was a barn and the sheep was located in the northeast area. Additionally, a farmhouse and the chickens were located in the southeast section of a beechwood farm. Moreover, the vegetables were located in the south, while the soft fruits were in the west. Furthermore, in the northwest, the fruit trees were located.

currently, significant changes have taken place. The former area of sheep has been superseded by the solar panels, parking and a camping field, whereas a barn has been replaced by the holiday cottages and relocated in the southeast of a farm. Secondly, a farm shop is added in the section of the fruit trees in the northwest. Lastly, the vegetables, soft fruits, fruit trees, chickens, and a farmhouse remained at their previous locations in a beechwood farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm site in 1950 and the present day. You have provided a clear overview and highlighted the key changes, such as the introduction of solar panels and holiday cottages. However, the description of the 1950 layout is slightly repetitive in its sentence structure, and some details could be more precisely grouped to improve the flow of information. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more explicit; for instance, instead of listing items in separate sentences, you could contrast the old and new uses of specific areas more directly to demonstrate a better grasp of the 'comparison' requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs, which provides a clear structure. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'Additionally', 'currently', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the repeated use of 'a beechwood farm' at the end of several sentences is unnecessary and makes the text feel slightly repetitive. Improving the use of pronouns and synonyms to refer back to previously mentioned locations would enhance the overall flow and cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'superseded', 'transformation', and 'facilities' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the sheep was located' (sheep is plural) and 'a farm shop is added' (should be 'has been added' for consistency). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. Attempting to use more specific descriptive language for spatial relationships or changes in land use would help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is generally clear throughout the response. There are some grammatical errors, particularly with articles and subject-verb agreement, such as 'the sheep was' instead of 'the sheep were' and 'a beechwood farm' (which should be 'Beechwood Farm' as a proper noun). Additionally, there are minor tense inconsistencies when describing the changes. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent verb tenses and correct article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
