IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two diagrams demonstrate how a farm known as Beechwood Farm has transformed from 1950.

Overall, the farm has undergone huge development after 1950. This includes the implementation of modern technologies such as solar panels, construction of farm shops, transformation of tracks to roads, parking spots, and the introduction of camping field and cottages for hosting tourists.

In 1950, while the large field was used for raising sheeps, now is divided into several sectors. As the old tracks has been converted to roads, the farm introduced two parking spots in the large field for holding vehicles. Another portion of the field is converted to host solar panels. Moreover, a camping field is developed for the tourists.

On the other side of the track, several changes can be noticed. In 1950, the other side of the track was prominently used for farming different kinds of vegetables, fruits, and chickens. But the portion where fruit trees were planted, now contains a small farm shop. The barn was relocated from the right side to the intersection of two tracks, and currently holds holiday cottages for hosting tourists. Even though, there was a lot of development, the sections where soft fruits and vegetables were raised remained the same as 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have successfully highlighted key changes such as the introduction of solar panels, the conversion of tracks to roads, and the addition of tourist facilities. The overview provides a clear summary of the overall development. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, you mention the field is now divided into 'several sectors' but could be more specific about the layout. Additionally, ensure that all details are accurate; you mention the barn was relocated, but the visual evidence suggests the original barn remains while new structures were added. Overall, the response covers the requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different areas of the farm. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'now', 'Moreover', and 'On the other side of the track' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different sections of the site. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the development of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transformed', 'implementation', 'converted', and 'relocated'. There is an attempt to use specific terminology related to the diagram. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'raising sheeps' (the plural of sheep is sheep) and 'hosting tourists' (which is slightly repetitive). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'situated in the northern part' or 'replaced by'. Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the large field was used for raising sheeps, now is divided' (missing subject 'it') and 'the old tracks has been converted' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'Even though, there was a lot of development' is punctuated incorrectly. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past versus present states will help improve your accuracy.
