Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which severely impacts the task achievement score. Because the essay is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence, it fails to provide a comprehensive summary of the main features or a full comparison between the two time periods. While the student identifies some changes, such as the conversion of the sheep area and the reconstruction of the track, the lack of development and the failure to complete the task prevent a higher score. To improve, you must ensure you describe all key changes and reach the minimum word count.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear structure due to its unfinished nature. While there is a brief attempt at an overview, the lack of paragraphing and the abrupt ending make it difficult to follow a logical progression. Cohesive devices are minimal, and the flow of information is interrupted by the incomplete final sentence. To improve, ensure you use clear paragraph breaks—one for the introduction/overview and one or two for the body details—and use linking words like 'whereas' or 'in contrast' to connect your comparisons.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'area'. There is little attempt to use more precise or academic terminology related to map descriptions (e.g., 'transformed', 'replaced', 'situated'). The phrasing 'old map' and 'current map' is functional but lacks the sophistication expected for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, focus on using a wider range of vocabulary to describe spatial changes and land use, and ensure you use articles correctly (e.g., 'the' current map).
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors, particularly regarding article usage (e.g., 'farm looks', 'track was', 'on north side'). The sentence structures are simple and lack the complexity required for higher bands. The incomplete sentence at the end also demonstrates a lack of control over sentence structure. To improve, focus on mastering the use of definite and indefinite articles and practice combining simple sentences into more complex structures using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions.
