The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The map illustrate the change that have taken place at Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the farm has gone the significant development, changing from a traditional agricultural site into a more diversified area that includes tourists facilities and energy infrastructure. However, the area used for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables have remained largely unchanged.
In 1950, northern part of the farm consisted mainly of fruit trees and soft-fruits fields, while vegetables were grown in the central area. A large area in the east was used for sheep grazing. There was also a barn, farmhouse and chicken area in the southeastern section. An unpaved road ran through the farm, connecting these facilities with the main road in the northwest.
Today, the agriculture fields remain in broadly the same locations, although several new facilities have been added. The former sheep grazing area has been transformed into a camping field, with a parking area and a solar panels also being introduced. A farm shop and another parking area has been built near the fruit trees. In the southeastern part, the original farm buildings have been modified: holiday cottages have been added beside the farmhouse, while the barn has been relocated slightly. The chicken area has ben disappeared.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have successfully compared the 1950 layout with the present day, highlighting the shift from purely agricultural use to a mix of tourism and energy infrastructure. The overview is clear and captures the essence of the changes. You have covered all parts of the task well, including the retention of agricultural areas and the specific additions like solar panels and holiday cottages. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details, such as the specific location of the new farm shop relative to the fruit trees, are described with maximum precision.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the past and present states. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'Today', and 'However' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the flow between sentences could make the text even more cohesive. Overall, the structure is logical and easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and changes, such as 'diversified', 'infrastructure', 'transformed', and 'relocated'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'tourists facilities' (should be 'tourist facilities') and 'has ben disappeared' (should be 'has disappeared'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure consistent accuracy in word forms. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the information clearly and with some flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The map illustrate' (subject-verb agreement), 'the change that have taken place' (subject-verb agreement), and 'a solar panels' (article usage). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the content. To achieve a higher band, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage, as these are the primary areas where accuracy is currently lacking.
