IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagrams given display information about the changes made to the Beechwood farm since it was constructed in 1950.
Overall, a couple features were removed throughout the years including the area that had previously housed sheep. Conversly, many things were added to the site namely several parking lots, a camping field and a set of solar panels. Other features remain untouched, such as the areas occupied by soft fruits and vegetables.
Previously, a large area right in front of the barn was dedicated to sheep. However, in the current design, that area has been converted into two separate sites: a camping field and a collection of solar panels. Two parking lots were added across both sites. Additionally, a notable adjustment was made to the tracks as they were replaced with roads instead.
Moreover, the barn was moved beside the vegetables land with two roads leading to it, and its previous building was converted into holiday cottages. However, the farmhouse situated behind it has remained unchanged, and so has the area specified for chickens. Lastly, a farm shop was constructed at the entrance in front of the parking lot, amongst the fruit trees.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all key features of the two maps. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the removal of the sheep area and the addition of solar panels, parking lots, and the farm shop. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. You have made relevant comparisons between the 1950 layout and the current site. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, mentioning the specific relocation of the barn relative to the original position adds depth. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the significant developments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information thematically. The use of cohesive devices such as 'conversely', 'additionally', and 'moreover' helps the flow of information. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the detailed descriptions. While the transition between the second and third body paragraphs is generally smooth, ensure that referencing remains precise throughout to avoid any ambiguity regarding which 'site' or 'area' is being discussed. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'converted', 'notable adjustment', and 'remained unchanged'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'vegetables land' (should be 'vegetable plots' or 'vegetable area') and 'a couple features' (should be 'a couple of features'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly and effectively throughout the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally controlled. There are a few minor slips, such as the spelling error 'Conversly' (should be 'Conversely') and the phrasing 'the area that had previously housed sheep', which is grammatically sound but could be more concise. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions to describe the changes in the farm's layout more formally.
