IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the changes that took place on Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present day. In this essay, I will explain the changes by comparing and pinpointing its main features.
The beechwood farm in 1950 has a river and a road which is crossing over the river. Furthermore there is a large sheep area with some tracks on its left side, and between river and tracks fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables and some area is covered by barn, farmhouse and chickens.
The map in recent times shows that river and road are at its same place, whereas the tracks have been replaced by a road which means new road is built on tracks. The barn and farm shop relocated all the other fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are in the same location as it was before. Addition of holiday cottages can be seen on the south east side of the map. Sheep area is occupied by camping field and some space is covered by parking and solar panels.
Overall, a lot of changes can be seen in recent farm, like parking space, camping field and holiday cottage were not there before and some locations have been changed for farm shop and barn.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the replacement of tracks with a road, the addition of holiday cottages, and the conversion of the sheep area. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the main features are reported, the comparison between the two periods could be more sophisticated. The summary of changes in the final paragraph is a bit repetitive of the body paragraphs. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift from agricultural production to tourism-related facilities, rather than just listing changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 1950 layout to the present day. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Furthermore' and the use of 'In this essay' are standard but could be more varied. Referencing is sometimes unclear; for example, the phrase 'relocated all the other fruit trees' is grammatically awkward and makes the relationship between the farm shop and the crops confusing. Improved use of linking words and clearer referencing would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a basic description of the farm's features. However, there is a lack of precision and variety. Phrases like 'sheep area' and 'some area is covered by' are repetitive and simplistic. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'relocated all the other fruit trees', which does not accurately describe the spatial changes. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to map descriptions, such as 'situated in the northern quadrant', 'undergone significant transformation', or 'replaced by infrastructure'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder clarity. For example, 'The beechwood farm in 1950 has a river' uses the wrong tense for a historical description. There are also issues with articles ('the river and road are at its same place') and subject-verb agreement. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent tense usage for historical data and improving article usage will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
