Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The images display the layout of Beechwood Farm in 1950 compared to how the same site stands today.

In 1950, the land consisted of various plantations that included vegetables, soft fruits and fruit trees alongside a flowing river. In the south-east part of the area the main farmhouse was situated with a barn on its side. Poultry animals like chickens were also kept in the same region. The entire north-eastern area was dedicated to the sheep. A narrow track connected all these regions, which had a peculiar triangular pattern at its center. The same track at its further end connected to the main road.

Many major changes have been made to the land ever since. However, the track, the main road, the farmhouse, the plantations and the poultry area still stands the same. A new farm shop has been introduced along the fruit trees. The barn has been relocated to slightly below the triangular track junction. And the original barn area has been replaced with holiday cottages. The sheep area is redeveloped to be a camping field and some solar panels have been installed on the side. Two parking spots have also been constructed on the two ends of the road.

Overall, the main focus of the land was farming and managing farm animals in 1950, whereas in present day, the it focuses equally on the agricultural and commercial aspects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all key features of the two maps. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the addition of the farm shop, the relocation of the barn, and the conversion of the sheep area into a camping site. The overview provided in the final paragraph is clear and highlights the shift from purely agricultural use to a mix of agriculture and commerce. The comparison between 1950 and the present day is well-integrated throughout the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use precise terminology for spatial relationships (e.g., 'north-east' vs 'north-eastern area') and avoid minor inaccuracies, such as stating the poultry area remains the same when the map indicates it has been removed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs describing the two time periods, and a concluding summary. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'However', and 'whereas' to link information effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the description of the past from the present. The referencing is generally clear, although some transitions between sentences could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow further. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, including terms like 'redeveloped', 'relocated', 'constructed', and 'commercial aspects'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are a few minor word choice issues, such as 'poultry animals' (poultry already implies birds) and 'on its side' (beside it would be more natural). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'area' or 'region' to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more flexible command of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used passive voice effectively to describe the changes (e.g., 'has been introduced', 'have been installed'). While there are occasional minor errors, such as 'the poultry area still stands the same' (should be 'remains the same') and 'the it focuses' (a typo), the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control of punctuation and tense usage is generally strong, which allows for clear communication of the information provided in the diagrams.
