IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The maps depict the comparison of Beechwood farm in 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the key feature is that in the present day the site is more eco-friendly and tourist-friendly than in previous years which was mainly focused on agriculture. However, the total area of the place along with the track placement and the river is identical to the previous years.
In the modern time, the area that was occupied by sheep in 1950 is now split into two parts, a camping field and solar panels. The noteworthy detail in this specific area is that the two parking slots included in both partitions, one near the designated camping area and the other is close to the solar panels. Both parking areas are designed to be near the roads which were changed from tracks.
The unchanged areas in the rest of the parts include fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and the farmhouse. The extra facility includes farm shops in the fruit tree area and the barn relocated connecting two roads from the near farmhouse section. Moreover, the previous barn is now turned into a cottage for holidays.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have provided a clear overview of the changes at Beechwood farm, successfully identifying the main trends such as the shift from agriculture to tourism. You effectively highlighted key developments like the introduction of solar panels and the camping area. However, the response could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, while you mention the barn was relocated, describing its original position relative to the farmhouse would have added more detail. Additionally, the description of the 'parking slots' is slightly confusing; clarifying their relationship to the new roads would strengthen the report. Overall, you covered the main features well, but a more systematic approach to comparing the two maps would elevate the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In the modern time', 'Moreover', and 'The noteworthy detail' helps guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the phrase 'the two parking slots included in both partitions', the connection could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'eco-friendly', 'noteworthy detail', and 'relocated' effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'In the modern time' (which should be 'In modern times') and 'the rest of the parts' (which is slightly vague). While you successfully use some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more precise descriptive language related to map analysis, such as 'transformed', 'converted', or 'situated'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the two parking slots included in both partitions, one near the designated camping area and the other is close to the solar panels' (which lacks a main verb in the second clause) and 'the previous barn is now turned into' (which should be 'has been turned into'). Despite these errors, your meaning is consistently clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on ensuring that all clauses have a clear subject and verb, especially when describing complex spatial relationships.
