IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The figures depict the comparison of Beechwood farm in 1950 and the present day.

Overall, the key feature is that in the present day the site is more eco-friendly and tourist-friendly focused than in previous years which was mainly focused on agriculture. Conversely, the total area of the place along with the track placement and the river is identical to the previous years.

The unchanged areas in the rest of the parts include fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and the farmhouse. The extra facility includes farm shop in the fruit tree area and the barn rebuilt connecting two roads from the near farmhouse section. Moreover, the previous barn is now turned into a cottage for holiday.

In the modern time, the area that was occupied by sheep in 1950 is now split into two parts, a camping field and solar panels. The noteworthy detail in this specific area is that the two parking slots included in both sections, one near the designated camping area and the other is close to the solar panels. Both parking areas are designed to be near the roads which were changed from tracks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have clearly highlighted the shift from agricultural focus to eco-tourism, and you correctly noted the unchanged elements. However, the description of the changes is occasionally imprecise. For instance, you mention the barn was 'rebuilt connecting two roads', but the map shows the barn was converted and the tracks were upgraded to roads. Additionally, the detail about parking slots is slightly confusing; the map shows parking areas, but your description of their placement relative to the camping and solar panels could be more clearly linked to the visual evidence. Overall, the summary is accurate and covers the key changes well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary of changes. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'Moreover', and 'In the modern time' helps guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used effectively to group related information, such as the unchanged areas versus the new developments. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of specific map locations could be more precise to ensure the reader follows the spatial changes without ambiguity. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'eco-friendly', 'noteworthy detail', and 'designated'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the total area of the place' (a bit informal) and 'the extra facility includes farm shop' (missing an article). To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure articles are used correctly when introducing new features. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the previous years which was mainly focused' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'the area that was occupied by sheep in 1950 is now split' (which is accurate, but the sentence structure becomes slightly clunky later). Punctuation is generally handled well, though some sentences could be tightened for better flow. The errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent control over complex structures and articles would improve the overall accuracy.
