Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates how the beechwood farm has changed from 1950 to present day.

Overall, the farm has been significantly redeveloped, with many orginal features being removed or replaced. The most noticable change can be seen in the sheep's area.

Previously in 1950, the large area on the north east corner of the farm was occupied for keeping the sheeps. Now it has changed considerably with many new features being added. Two new parking lots have been constructed, one is directly acessible from the main road and the other is acessible from the road that is connected with the main. Solar panels and camping field has also been added.

The other most striking change from the past is the conversion of tracks in to the roads that is connected with the main road. The old barn is converted in to a holiday cottages and new smaller barn is shifted towards the intersection of tracks. A new farm shop has also opened near the fruit trees. Area for, chickens, soft fruits, vegetables fruit trees and farmhouse is same as in the 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps well, identifying key changes such as the conversion of the sheep area into parking and camping facilities, and the development of the tracks into roads. The overview is clear and highlights the significant redevelopment. However, there are minor inaccuracies in the reporting of details; for instance, the text claims the farmhouse and fruit trees remain the same, but the map shows the farmhouse has been extended and the orchard layout has changed. Additionally, the term 'sheeps' is a grammatical error, and the description of the barn conversion could be more precise regarding the specific location changes. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, moving from a general overview to specific changes in the north-east area and then to other site developments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main points. Cohesive devices such as 'Previously', 'Now', and 'The other most striking change' are used to guide the reader through the comparison. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'the road that is connected with the main', which makes the connection between ideas feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be more tightly linked to improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some good attempts at descriptive language like 'redeveloped', 'conversion', and 'intersection'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the quality, such as 'orginal' (original), 'noticable' (noticeable), 'acessible' (accessible), and the incorrect pluralization 'sheeps' (sheep). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of plural forms and common spelling patterns. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the necessary information but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Solar panels and camping field has also been added' (should be 'have') and 'tracks in to the roads that is connected' (should be 'are connected'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some awkward prepositional phrases and article usage errors. While the meaning remains clear throughout, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but accuracy needs improvement.
