IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map chart below illustrates the changes that have been made in Beechwood Farm since 1950 to till today.
Overall, the Beechwood Farm is developed with adding some outdoor activities and amenities such as the camping field, solar panels and so on.
In 1950, the Beechwood Farm used to provide some edible products like fruits and vegetables between the river and track. There were various parts that were utilized as barn, farmhouse and chickens on the corner of south-east side. The wide spread area was only for sheeps in north-east side along with the huge bridge on the opposite side.
These days, firstly, the track is converted into the road with the new facilities of the vehicle parking on the north and east side of the farm which connected with the road. Secondly, the sheep area is totally demolished and separated it among camping zone in the centre and installing solar panels in the corner for the electricity. The four sections like soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and the farmhouse remained untouched. But the new farm shop is built with the fruit trees for commercial purpose. Lastly, the barn area replaced with the new holiday cottages and barn shifted on the sharp edge side of the road between chickens and vegetables.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the maps, including the conversion of the track, the addition of the farm shop, and the relocation of the barn. The overview is clear and identifies the main trend of development. However, some descriptions are slightly imprecise; for instance, stating the sheep area was 'totally demolished' is a bit informal, and the location descriptions (e.g., 'sharp edge side') are somewhat vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that spatial relationships are described with more precision and that the distinction between what remained and what changed is consistently clear.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. The use of cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'secondly', and 'lastly' helps the reader follow the progression of changes. However, the transition between the past and present could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing is functional but could be more sophisticated in how it groups the changes. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'amenities', 'commercial purpose', and 'demolished' used correctly. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'map chart' (redundant) and 'sharp edge side', which lack precision. The phrase 'till today' is slightly informal for an academic report. To improve, focus on using more precise geographical and descriptive vocabulary, such as 'situated', 'adjacent to', or 'transformed', rather than relying on simpler verbs like 'changed' or 'built'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the Beechwood Farm is developed with adding' (should be 'has been developed by adding') and 'the sheep area is totally demolished and separated it' (incorrect pronoun usage). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'on the corner of south-east side'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage is recommended.
