IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The layouts visualize the area of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Overall, it can be seen that there is a significant difference in today's layout, with new amenities of farm shop, parking area, camping field with separate parking, and innovative technology of solar panels. There was a barn which is now shifted and replaced by holiday cottages, and track has made by road.
In 1950, farm was built in between the river side and track, where the fruit trees were located first and then soft fruits area; after that, there was a vegetables area. From the southwest, there were a chickens area, farmhouses and barn just below the track which separated it from large sheep area.
Today, the farm has changed with farm shop in a fruit trees area, and barn has replaced with holiday cottages below the road that has changed from track with barn which is located at the end of road. The major difference is presented in the sheep area where half are of it is used for camping field which has its parking, and half area is covered with solar panels, with another parking from its side.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the farm's transformation, identifying key changes such as the addition of the farm shop, camping area, and solar panels. However, the description of the 1950 layout is somewhat confusingly phrased, particularly the spatial relationships between the fruit trees, vegetables, and the barn. While the overview is present, it lacks a clear, concise summary of the most significant trends (e.g., the shift from purely agricultural use to a mix of tourism and renewable energy). The reporting of details is sometimes imprecise, making it difficult for the reader to visualize the exact changes without constant reference to the original images.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an overview to the 1950 state and then the current state. However, the flow within paragraphs is often hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as 'after that, there was a vegetables area' or 'the major difference is presented in the sheep area'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the relocation of the barn and the road, which makes the progression of ideas feel disjointed at times.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'track has made by road' and 'chickens area'. The student relies on basic descriptive language and struggles to use more sophisticated terminology to describe spatial changes or land use. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of flexibility and the presence of errors in word formation (e.g., 'half are of it') limit the score. A wider range of vocabulary related to maps and development would improve the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the farm shop', 'a vegetables area'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward passive constructions ('barn has replaced with holiday cottages'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often clunky, which affects the overall readability. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on consistent control of verb tenses and more accurate sentence building to ensure that complex ideas are expressed without error.
