IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The given maps illustrate the changes Beechwood Farm underwent from 1950 to the present.

Overall, there has been significant development of the farm for camping and tourism purposes. However, the layout of the fruit and vegetable fields, as well as the locations of the chicken barn and farmhouse, have remained unchanged.

One of the major infrastructural developments involves the conversion of the old track into a network of roads following a same route. Moreover, the area designated for sheep has been fully transformed into a camping site with two parking lots at either end, while a substantial area has been allocated for the installation of solar panels.

Meanwhile, the barn has been replaced by holiday cottages, and the old barn has been relocated to a new position between the vegetable fields and the chicken area. However, the vegetable and fruit fields have remained intact, with only one addition: a farm shop adjacent to the main road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies the main features of the maps, including the transition from agricultural use to tourism. You have successfully highlighted key changes, such as the conversion of the sheep area to a campsite and the addition of solar panels. The comparison between 1950 and the present is clear and accurate. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully precise; for instance, you mention the 'old barn' was relocated, but the map indicates a new barn structure. Overall, the overview is well-constructed and covers the significant developments appropriately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information thematically. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Meanwhile', and 'However' effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows well from the general overview to specific infrastructural changes. The referencing is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the spatial changes described.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for describing maps and changes, such as 'infrastructural developments', 'designated', 'allocated', and 'adjacent'. The word choice is generally precise and contributes to a professional tone. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'change' and 'development' to show even greater flexibility in your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of passive voice ('has been replaced', 'has been relocated') which is appropriate for this task. The grammar is accurate throughout, with no major errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and list items. The sentences are well-formed and demonstrate a high level of control over complex grammatical structures, making the text easy to follow and professional in its presentation.
