Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the farm's transformation, such as the addition of holiday cottages, solar panels, and the new road. However, the description is sometimes imprecise. For example, stating that the farmhouse and chicken area have the 'same direction' is vague and does not clearly describe their spatial relationship or lack of change. While the overview captures the shift from agriculture to tourism, some details are under-developed or confusingly phrased, such as the mention of the barn moving southwest. The response addresses the task requirements but lacks the precision and clear comparative analysis expected at higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs for the two time periods, and a concluding summary. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'In addition, A system of track changed' and 'Meanwhile, Include solar panels' are grammatically disjointed and hinder the flow of information. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when describing the movement of buildings. While there is a clear overall progression, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the presence of awkward transitions limit the effectiveness of the cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. The student relies on repetitive phrasing, such as 'have the same direction' and 'system of track'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the farm layout constructed for' (should be 'was designed for') and 'attach with parking' (should be 'connected to a car park'). The range is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but the lack of more specific descriptive language prevents a higher score. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical control is limited.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The plans illustrates'), missing articles ('A system of track'), and sentence fragments ('Today. there has significant changes'). The use of passive voice is attempted but often incorrectly formed, such as 'the farm layout constructed for'. While the meaning is usually understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
